Drawn to Nature: Pen & watercolour workshop

Artist Alicia Lane will deliver her workshop at the culmination of a week-long arts residency at the Brushtales Cabin.

Venture down to Rocky River, for an afternoon creating pen and watercolour artworks based on the beautiful nature around us.

We will be guided on our artistic journey by Dr Alicia Lane, a Magandjin/Brisbane based interdisciplinary artist working mainly in the mediums of ceramics, metalwork, jewellery and painting. Her work often explores themes relating to human impacts on nature and intersections between nature, technology culture and perception.

Alicia is our second artist-in-residence at the Brushtales Arts Residency program.

If you fancy a swim after the workshop, bring your togs and towel and we’ll take an afternoon dip in the Rocky River.

Workshop: Making the invisible, visible

Modern life has disconnected us from our spirit. Media is often shallow and empty, and designed to leave us hungry so we will consume more. But a spiritual void can never be filled with ‘things’—only the invisible will satisfy it. I believe the world is hungering for authentic spiritual experiences to reconnect us to ourselves and each other, and story is a lasting and beautiful way to provide that.

Stories are powerful. As humans we are wired for story, and a well-crafted one can sneak past our natural defences and get us to consider things we never naturally would. Whatever your understanding of spirituality, if you have sensed a world beyond this one, this practical workshop will teach you the key skills needed to transform your transcendent experiences into powerful works of fiction capable of helping others to take a step on their journey of transformation.

Cathryn deVries is an award-winning fantasy and sci-fi author who explores themes of restorative justice, empowerment, connection with earth and spirit, and finding the true self in her work — all wrapped up in an epic package of immersive world-building and sweet romance. A former Air Force engineer and recovering perfectionist, she now homeschools her children, two of whom are on the autism spectrum.
